I'm Sick of Being Sick

It has been a bad month for me. I’ve been sick. Chest X-ray says it is not pneumonia. Lack of effectiveness of antibiotics says it is not bacterial. No evidence of pleurisy. (Thank goodness. I did that once and it almost killed me!) So, the doctor thinks I have a major viral infection in my lungs. Marsha, as always, has been the angelic Nightingale at my side. But at the end of the day….I’m still sick.

Spiritual Health is the absence of Spiritual Sickness. But what is spiritual sickness or spiritual disease? Herman Bavinck, an old-time theologian, reminds us that there are three types of spiritual disease.

First, there is the disease of the mind. This has to do with pride of intellectualism and doctrine. The doctrine or the teaching is essential, but not all doctrines are crucial and so to argue over them is at times fruitless, useless, and pointless.

As a seminary professor for over 30 years, I have seen this disease in many students and some professors. And sometimes in the local church. On some points we need to be “dogmatic” and other times “bull-dogmatic.” But then there are times we just need to walk away.

The second disease is the disease of the heart. This involves the subjective feelings that lead to mysticism. We need doctrine to protect us from this. The church has been infiltrated by this disease mainly through worship models and counseling theories.

The third disease is the disease of the will. This is difficult to diagnose for it involves acts of piety, morality, and religious activity, but is often virtue signaling that is self-honoring and not God-honoring.

I hope my physical illness goes away soon. But I must always be on guard to diagnose spiritual diseases in my life.

The world is too much with us.

~William Wordsworth~

Most mature Christians know the biblical wisdom and instruction that informs us “Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:2) Most days and in most situations, it is not too difficult to do if I am paying attention. But I need to be paying attention. I need to be focused and be reminded that I live in this world, but am not to be part of it. Focus is the key.

I need to be aware so I can be ware of the seductive nature of the world that encompasses and encircles my life. As Albert Camus reminds me, “In order to understand the world one has to turn away from it on occasion.” But, in a crowded and much-connected world, being alone can require much-concerted effort. Living as we do in our modern world ubiquitous with technology it is often more difficult to get untangled or unplugged from the constant controlling noise of life.

The author of the Book of Hebrews reminds his Jewish Christian brothers and sisters who were amid severe persecution where to focus. He reminds them to - "fix their eyes on Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith who for the joy set before Him endured the cross despising the shame." (Hebrews 12:2)

America was founded by Christians. For the most part, Christianity guided its laws, social mores, civic ethics, and governance. But about year 2,000 Christianity became neutralized and now it is viewed with negativity.

Don't be surprised if the next step is that Christians are viewed with shame. Shame because we are not progressive enough to promote promiscuity and perversion. Shame because we are unwilling to adopt laws that are not only unbiblical but unethical.

The day is coming when being shamed for being a Christian will be a badge of honor.

   I'm Not Happy

The goal of my life is not necessarily to be happy. It is to be holy and hopeful.  But I must be honest:

  • I'm not happy politically. As I look at both parties it leads to despair. Even though one has a platform that's more acceptable to a Christian, neither is what I would wish. But I will vote!
  •  I'm not happy sociologically. Perversion seems to be everywhere, and our culture is creating more of it day by day.
  • I'm not happy economically. It seems that stability and trustworthiness are a thing of the past.
  • I'm not happy judicially. At the highest level, corruption has entered, and we are living in a world where verdicts are purchased.
  • I'm not happy emotionally and psychologically because all the above is true and I feel it.

Holiness has to do with my actions I remind myself of Romans 12:2 and Philippians 4:8 almost daily to guide me with my holiness.

As for hopefulness, I must admit, that although I am not hopeful in the short term, I am very hopeful in the long term. I am waiting for the world of the future (Hebrews 2:5) a Kingdom that cannot be shaken. (Hebrews 12:28).  I await a Kingdom and a King where righteousness dwells and rules. (Revelation 20)

I am waiting for Him - the Lord Jesus Christ. And until He comes, I will wait with holy conduct and a heavenly outlook. And I will pray often - Come Lord Jesus, quickly (Revelation 22:20).

"But if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought."

                                               -George Orwell-

We are getting ready to experience a new phase of “Word Salad” extraordinaire, or what might be called Orwellian vocabulary. Terms like — memory hole, newspeak, unperson, and groupthink are ready to make an appearance once again.

It is the political season and that brings an abundance of words, ingenious slogans, and outlandish promises that bear little connection to truth.

"Political language – and with variations this is true of all political parties, from Conservatives to Anarchists – is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind."

--- George Orwell

Christians need to be able to discern truth from bloviating and lying. Empty truths and half-truths function as lies and lies are deceptive and from the devil.

"...for he is a liar, and the father of lies." (John 8:44)

We are the Church of the living God and are to be the pillar and foundation of truth. (1 Timothy 3:15) The Church is the entity that maintains a culture and sustains a society.

Many would say, the times are evil. When have they not been? But as Saint Augustine said, "Live nobly and you will change the times."

Fear is: What If...?

Faith is: Even If...!

“The Faith” from one perspective is a set of propositions we hold as true or believe. We call it doctrine. But we also believe these doctrines “By Faith." We need both the content of truth and the confidence that it is true.

We are discovering that we are living in a world that has abandoned the belief that there is truth and that there is a reason to believe we need truth. In this type of world, everything is relative and that which is pragmatic is that which is practiced and promoted.

Now, more than ever before, Christians in America need to know “The Content of Faith” so they can have the confidence to “Believe the Faith.”

We need to remember that we are to “contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.” (Jude :3)

We have “The Faith” and we are to be Faithful to hold to it. But we need to remember---

Faith is not the conviction that everything will turn out okay, but it is the confidence that everything is okay no matter how things turn out.
