It's Not What You Are ---
It's What You Appear To Be
Today as always, we live in a world of perception. That being the case, we are often overwhelmed with style and underwhelmed with substance. It is unfortunate that it is not much different in the Christian world where each week we are exposed to a variety of Christian dancing bears and jugglers for Jesus.

During the day of the Apostle Paul, people were no different and the church at Corinth seemed to be desirous of showtime in a big-time way. However, Paul was not going to give in to their adolescent appetites. Mark it well, Paul desired to be biblically accurate and culturally relevant. But he also knew that the power of the gospel was not in the oratory presentation but in the penetrating power of the Spirit of God and His inspired word.

Hear Paul’s words of sacred scripture. I Corinthians 1:17- 2:4
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not in cleverness of speech, that the cross of Christ should not be made void.
For the word of the cross is to those who are perishing foolishness, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And the cleverness of the clever I will set aside.”
Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?
For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.
For indeed Jews ask for signs, and Greeks search for wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block, and to Gentiles foolishness, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised, God has chosen, the things that are not, that He might nullify the things that are, that no man should boast before God. But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, that, just as it is written, “Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
And when I came to you, brethren, I did not come with superiority of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God.
For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. And my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.

The penetration of the gospel to dead men is not dependent upon the personality of men, because the power of the gospel is not found in the presentation by men but in the message of the resurrected Christ.

Demand more of your pastors and depend more on Jesus.

Looking Toward Home
I find myself at that season of life when not only am I getting older, but some of my friends who are older (and younger) are dying. It is a natural state of affairs, but then again it does not feel natural or right.

I find myself comforted as I do what Paul commanded in Philippians 4:8: Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is anything worthy of excellence and if anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things.

This is the biblical way of perusing a perspective that is not only true but also helpful. There is also much sage advice revealing a divine perspective in the Old Testament. Perhaps Psalm 1:1-3 and Ecclesiastes 7:2 might be enlightening.

I find myself realizing that the dash on the gravestone is the great equalizer. Some die old and some die young. But death seems to be one for one.

I find the wonderful words of Don Wyrtzen’s hymn a helpful divine perspective.

                     “Finally Home”
“But just think of stepping on shore—And finding it Heaven!
Of touching a hand—And finding it God’s!
Of breathing new air—And finding it celestial!
Of waking up in glory—
Finally Home."

Now that about says it all!

We are living in a world today where unfortunately there are very good examples that summarize the demise of our culture.

One recent example this week was the Navy's commissioning of the “USNS Harvey Milk.” The ship was named after a Navy veteran and a former city councilman in San Francisco. Harvey Milk was also openly gay. To put an exclamation point on the meaning of the ceremony, Paula Neira, a member of the LGBTQ+ Bar Association, and an openly transgendered person, serving as the clinical program director at the Johns Hopkins Center for transgender health, commissioned the ship by breaking the traditional bottle of champagne upon its bow.

Now that about says it all. This is a vivid illustration of the change in culture, a clash of civilizations, and a transformation of worldviews before our very eyes.

Unfortunately, this reality should not surprise us. The fact is that the corruption of our culture is quite evident by the measurements of history and this has been the way it has been all along. The early church was born and thrived amongst a corrupt civilization filled with perversion and powered by tyrants. Yet in spite of these realities, what Jesus said was true: "I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail."

Although unfortunately we must be disgusted, we must not be devastated. Although we are crushed, we must not be confused. We must make no mistake that we are locked in battle with our infernal foe the devil and we must take steps to do as the Apostle Paul instructed the churches of his day. We too must stand firm, pray without ceasing, be filled with the Spirit, walk in the Spirit, and resist the devil.

Unfortunately, the times are evil. But as Saint Augustine reminds us; “You say the times are evil? Live nobly and you will change the times.” Now that about says it all!

"Nothing is so difficult as not deceiving oneself."
-Ludwig Wittgenstein-

  • Deception is the ability to misdirect a person.
  • Deceiving normally involves the covering up of truth from a person.
  • Deceit seeks to manipulate a person.
  • Dishonesty seeks to lie to a person.
  • Distortion seeks to confuse a person.
  • Duplicity seeks to trick a person.

Unfortunately, not only do people attempt to enact these evils upon other people, but at times we actually perpetrate them upon ourselves.

What is a person to do? Desire divine directions.
How do we find directions that are true and right?

  • King David pronounces: “How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Thy word. With all my heart I have sought Thee; Do not let me wander from Thy commandments. Thy Word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against Thee.”  Psalm 119: 9-11

  • The Apostle Paul promises that: “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness...” 2 Timothy 3:16

  • Jesus proclaims: “Thy Word is truth.” John 17:17

Where are you getting your directions?
