There are many things that I do not understand. The preeminent area of my lack of understanding concerns “The Lord my God”. The more I know, the more I know that I don’t know.
His name clarifies and confuses me. Yahweh - I am that I am (Exodus 3:14). This grammatical couplet and lexical duplication of terms leave me perplexed. But this is as it should be for God is God, and I am not.
Of course, there are things I do not comprehend. How could I, who was created, fully comprehend the Creator who was and is and shall always be?
Yahweh is self-existent. He is species unique. He never became nor is He becoming. He simply IS BEING.
- Yahweh is Spirit and as such is not subject to time and space limitations.
- Yahweh is Simple; He is not made of nor does He exist in parts. He is a unified Being.
- Yahweh is Immutable: He does not change - ontologically or morally.
- Yahweh is Eternal: His essence exists in eternity.
- Yahweh is All Knowing: Knowing all with simultaneity, not sequentially.
- Yahweh is truly Awesome.
I would suggest that we reserve the word ‘awesome’ for He who is truly and uniquely awesome, for He is the only true and wise God. As Pharaoh apocryphally said after the Red Sea incident concerning Moses, “His God is God!”
I may not understand all, but I understand enough to be somewhat confused but very comforted.
“Our God is an awesome God. He reigns from heaven above with wisdom, power and love, our God is an awesome God.”
Only God IS.
