The Welfare for Humanity is Always the Alibi of Tyrants.

-Albert Camus-

When I was in high school, I had to read 1984 and Animal Farm by George Orwell and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. They seemed to be interesting literary adventures to be parsed and dissected but never really believed that they could happen.

Fast forward 50 years and futurist dreams are now actualized reality. At times like this when we have become so disconnected from truth, the simple statement of the obvious is the first duty of people who are intelligent.

It is obvious that people are either a man or a woman. It is obvious that a parent deciding to allow a 5 year-old to decide they want to destroy their body so they can change biology is both a morally repugnant and physically and psychologically dangerous. It is obvious that homosexuality is biblically wrong---a sin, and that it is contrary to all of nature. It is becoming obvious that American leadership at the highest level is engaged in a massive enterprise of lies and deception. As Isaac Asimov reminds us; “When stupidity is considered patriotism, it is unsafe to be intelligent.” There are a lot of stupid and dangerous ideas being forced upon us in our country and it is creating an unsafe culture. As Bertrand Russell reminds us: "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts."

It is unfortunate that the Church is partially responsible for our culture being confused and corrupted. Many denominations and local churches actually endorsed such unbiblical ideas. Many other churches never took a stand to be salt and light in our culture or the pillar of truth in our American society.

The fact is, many Christians think these moral issues are theologically permissible. Others actually voted for these moral decisions to be enacted and made into legislation. I am sure some of them did not understand the unintended consequences of their vote, but that is another problem for another day.

Mark it well. There is no premium on stupidity in the Christian life. We are to be wise as a serpent and gentle as a dove. How do we flex the muscles of both compassion and conviction? How do we live right in the land of the liar? How do we live morally in an immoral world?

First: Seek to be biblically accurate and culturally relevant with your assessment of our society.

Second: Be vocal and visible in the public square and vote based on biblical truth.

Third: Remember the end game is not a Christian American Kingdom. The Kingdom of God waits for the King to come and set up His Kingdom (Rev 20). Until then we are to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ and the offer of the gift of eternal life for a lost and dying world.

Finally: Our greatest asset which provides our greatest ability to create change both in the church and our culture is prayer. This is not a throw-away fact. This is truth.

Personal power is ephemeral. Political power is corruptible. Real Power is in Prayer as we make our requests and supplications to the only true and wise God.

There has only been one truly serious philosophical problem,

and that is suicide.

-Albert Camus-

I lost a friend this week, a Christian brother who came to the point in his life that he chose death. He loved Jesus, studied His word, and was involved serving others. However, the situation and circumstances that surrounded him finally overwhelmed him. He lost sight of Jesus and lost hope.

I have taught Ethics and on the topic of Suicide in both a secular medical school and in evangelical seminaries. I have contributed a chapter in a book. Suicide: A Christian Response: Crucial Considerations for Choosing Life (Kregel Publications, 1998). I have taught at churches and worked with a suicide prevention ministry, and over the years encountered the issue as a pastor and professional counselor. I also have felt the cold reality in my immediate family more than once. The topic of suicide is not simply a professional issue but a personal one as well.

Having gone to a Catholic university, I understand the Papal perspective of Moral Theology and the consequences of “Mortal Sin”.  As a Professor of Theology and an evangelical protestant, I also understand biblical truth. The truth is that when Jesus paid for my sin, he paid for all my sins. I am forgiven and I am loved.

Why does God do this? Because God is love. And as George Strait reminds us about God’s love, “Daddies don't just love their children every now and then… it’s a love without end. Amen.”

My friend is with the Lord Jesus. I will join him one day. Until then, I have “a reason for the hope within me” to share to others. You do also… I hope.

Truth passes through three stages. First it is ridiculed. Second it is violently opposed. Third It is accepted as being self-evident.

-Arthur Schopenhauer-

America was founded on biblical principles because the Bible was believed to be true. It was self-evident. However, our world has changed and so has the cultural view of the Bible. Today, sacred scripture is scrutinized through a secular lens and is not only ridiculed it is also perceived by many to be dangerous.

As Arthur Schlesinger declared, “The mystic prophets of the absolute cannot save us. Sustained by our history and traditions, we must save ourselves, at whatever risk of heresy or blasphemy.” Make no mistake - he is talking to those of us who believe the Bible to be true. We are the “mystic prophets of the absolute” and we are dangerous to our society because we actually and truly believe the Bible is true.

The reason they are so fearful of the Bible is that it declares that God is God, and we are not. Second, the Bible describes man as a sinner. Third, the Bible demands that man is responsible and accountable for sin (Romans 1).

The proclamations of the Bible and the principles that emerge from it are being purged from our schools and being replaced with filth called art and choice. The Bible is being extricated from the rule of law in local government especially in the office of the District Attorney and the Federal Department of Justice and FBI. The results are devastating for every person and disastrous for our country.

If it is true that the Bible has been ridiculed and now is being violently opposed, is it then possible that we are close to the Bible once more being accepted as being self-evident?

No one knows if or when the latest progressive and perverted social transformation will be abated. But if it is, it will be perhaps because we who believe the God of the Bible, live like it, and manifest Him to a lost and dying world.

"Because the sentence against an evil deed is not executed quickly, therefore the hearts of the sons of men among them are given fully to do evil." Ecclesiastes 8:11

The American concepts of law and justice were conceived by and constructed upon the Bible. All historians and every sociologist of history recognize this fact. When laws are broken, and justice is absent people’s hearts grow cold and evil is aroused.

The recent assault of hubris and the incursion of lies and deceit by both congressmen and directors of our nation’s highest institutions, not to mention leaders of business and media, has had a chilling effect on all of us. All of this will go down in American history captured by the catchphrase “Hunter” the most recent and revolting illustration of the corruption of law and the distortion of justice.

Christians from the birth of the Church evidenced in Acts 2 and experienced throughout history, have most often found themselves in an unwelcoming environment encased with injustice instigated by evil thoughts and intentions. This should not surprise us. We are in a spiritual battle and the whole world lies in the lap of the evil one. (See 1 John 2:15, 5:19; Ephesians 6:13-17)

However, the church does not need a friendly cultural host to survive or thrive. Environment is not essential to be successful in making disciples of all nations. We need the power of the Holy Spirit to drive and direct us as we live in the midst of a lost and dying world.

I hope you sense both the significance of the danger and the supply of power we have as we abide in Jesus and experience the power of the Holy Spirit to guide and lead us as we negotiate and navigate our lives in the midst of our corrupt and confused world.

Today is like every day, a good day, if we know what to do with it.

Always remember, “Greater is He who is in you than he that is in the world” (I John 4:4)
