"Someday you'll be old enough to start reading fairytales again."

C.S. Lewis

As I get older I have realized that many people believe what I believe is a fairytale. I try to be a clear-eyed realist and not hold a rose-colored glasses type of viewpoint.

As I look about the cultural landscape and see our societal trajectory, I appreciate and I apprehend that things are not looking good. I understand I am a citizen of Death’s Grayland, but I also believe that I am waiting for the brilliant appearance of the Kingdom of God and with it, the culmination of eternal life.

There are those who believe that the church is to bring in the kingdom of God by transforming all of society and then after the transformation, will come Jesus. This is called Post-Millennialism. Jesus comes post (after) the coming of the kingdom. (But what is a kingdom without a king?) This is the theology that fuels much of the Christian social action ministries of such people as Doug Wilson and R.C. Sproul.

I believe in Pre-Millennialism. Jesus comes before His kingdom (Pre) and will rule over it for 1,000 years (Rev. 20:1-11). The church today is still under the great commission of Matthew 28, but its goal is not to make the world a Christian world. That day and time await the coming of the King.

(Lest we get too “caught up” in theology, we will not talk about the Rapture and what it is and when it is - Pun intended.)

I do not believe my beliefs are a fairytale or a pipe dream. They are not an ancient fable but a fabulous truth that is worth living for and if need be, dying for.

Vision without a plan is but a dream. A task without a vision is drudgery.

"We must accept finite disappointment but never lose infinite hope."

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Hope is a very important word, and it must be defined and understood for what it is not and what it is.

Hope is not the emotional desire that is only slightly tied to reality. I hope I win the Lotto; I hope the Cowboys win another game. Hope is also more than a feeling of expectation or desire for a certain thing to happen.

In the Bible, hope is the firm conviction based on who God is and what God says in His word. And what He says will happen, will happen!

“For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope."

"Now may the God who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus,

so that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 15:4-6

God’s word gives us Hope so that we might glorify God.

But right now we might not be feeling very hopeful. Christians around the world and in America

are experiencing all types of persecution for their faith.

Where is there hope when the population of New York City elects a Muslim, Jew hating, democratic socialist-aka Marxist, who has never had a significant job in government or leadership and management to become the mayor? And this in the city that has the largest population of Jews in America, many of whom voted for this person. (Reminds me of the truth that the acidic H.L. Mencken, a reporter of the Scopes Monkey Trial said, “Nobody ever lost a bet when they bet on the stupidity of the American People.”)

But there is reason for hope, even if New York City looks to engage in societal and municipal suicide. All of creation is experiencing now what the Bible calls “groaning,” but we still have hope.

“For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body."

"For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it.” (Romans 8:22-25)

Perhaps this is what Martin Luther King, Jr. had in mind concerning the infinite hope. I know that is what the apostle Paul had in mind.

“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God. And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” (Romans 5:1-5)

We are groaning in this present world to glory in the world of the future. And that is not simply “a hope.” It is the HOPE based on the word of God.

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:13)

Artificial intelligence, Armageddon, and the Antichrist

Wow, sounds like a great movie! The truth is, it is coming to a theater near you. In some sense, the Future is Now. For 2,000 years the church has been the glue that has held our civilization together.

As Christopher Dawson explained it:

“There has never been any unitary organization of Western culture apart from that of the Christian Church, which provided an effective principle of social unity. . . . Behind the ever-changing pattern of Western culture there was a living faith which gave Europe a certain sense of spiritual community, in spite of all the conflicts and divisions and social schisms that marked its history.

When a culture built around such a sacred order dies, there will be disintegration at every level of society. The very existence of an individual’s life will shift dramatically. “The family structure, the meaning of work, moral attitudes, the very existence of morals at all, notions of good and evil, sexual mores, perspectives on everything from money to rest to work to nature to kin to responsibility to duty.” Everything will be up for grabs because everything is relative, for there is no eternal God and no eternal truth.

We are living in a day when we do not need political consensus but spiritual and moral courage because, as George Orwell reminds us, “truth is treason in an empire of lies.”

Ephesians 4:25- Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one of you, with his neighbor, for we are members of one another.

Ephesians 5:15-17 - Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men, but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil. So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
